Free Open House at two national museums – Experience historical hunting riding

On Saturday, September 5, there is free admission to two national museums when The Green Museum and Gammel Estrup Denmark's Manor House Museum invite you to a joint Open House.

Thanks to the support of the ELRO Foundation, guests can experience living cultural history, activities for the whole family – and this year also historical hunting riding with riders in red jackets and horn blowing.

The sound of hunting horns, riders in red hunting jackets and horses once again become part of the experience when historical hunting riding moves between the audience at Det Grønne Museum and Gammel Estrup. Together with the many activities at the two museums, it forms the framework for a day where cultural history comes alive.

– Cultural history is best experienced when you encounter it where it belongs. Open House offers the opportunity to explore across two national museums, where living cultural heritage, historical environments and shared stories form the framework for a day of experiences for the whole family. The historical hunting ride will be a special feature that brings the traditions of hunting very close to the audience. We are pleased that the support of the ELRO Foundation once again makes it possible to open the doors with free admission, says director Kasper Steenfeldt Tipsmark, Gammel Estrup Denmark's Manor Museum and director Anne Bjerrekær, The Green Museum.

Historical hunting riding close to the audience

In collaboration with hunt rider Tessa Pultz, the museums invite you to historical hunt riding, where riders in the characteristic red hunting jackets and hunting horns create the atmosphere of the historical hunts. This time, the riding takes place closer to the audience, so guests have an even better opportunity to experience both horses, riders and traditions up close.

The riders ride out from the museums at 10:30 a.m., and the hunt ends with the traditional parade in the courtyard.

Experiences at both museums

The historic hunting ride is one of the day's big features, but there are experiences at both museums throughout the day.

At Gammel Estrup you can explore the many historic living rooms and halls from the basement to the attic and learn the story of the past lords and servants. You can also visit the cozy manor kitchen, where the kitchen maids in historical costume welcome guests and sell coffee and homemade cake directly from the large wood-burning stove. And outside, children can try their hand at the knight's course, where they can ride a fancy horse and be knighted by Gammel Estrup.

At the Green Museum, this year's theme is the apple. Eight of the museum's volunteer guilds show how the apple has left its mark on Danish food culture, crafts and everyday life throughout time. Guests can, among other things, help to mash apples, bake apple slices, taste apple bacon, apple cake and home-brewed beer, as well as hear stories about apples in Danish folklore. At the same time, the museum's volunteers demonstrate old crafts and traditional working methods, and children and adults can, among other things, try carving a bow.

Both museums' exhibitions, gardens, outdoor areas and live animals are open all day. At the Green Museum, guests can explore the history of hunting, forests, agriculture and food, while Gammel Estrup tells the story of life on Danish manors through the centuries.
