Taste the occupation era and celebrate liberation

Experience Bettina Buhl and get a taste of the occupation era on May 4th.
Experience a very special evening on May 4th, when The Green Museum, in collaboration with Den Gamle Stald, invites you to a historical dinner to mark the 80th anniversary of Denmark's liberation.
Here you step directly into an atmospheric time warp, where authentic taste experiences meet vivid stories from occupation-era Denmark.
We focus on the harsh years of the war, but also on the emerging joy and relief that came with the liberation in 1945. As the evening darkens outside, we light candles – just as they did back then, when light in the windows once again became the symbol of freedom after five years of darkness. At the same time, a 3-course menu is served, composed according to the conditions of the rationing era, but with the ingenuity and creativity that characterized the kitchens in Denmark at the time.
The story and the menu
The menu was developed with inspiration from the TV2 series “Badehotellet”. Our food historian and museum curator, Bettina Buhl, was a historical food consultant on the series and will share her experiences in recreating the meals and household of the past. Gain insight into how magic was created in the kitchen with limited ingredients, while the upper class tried to maintain a sense of luxury – even when war was raging in Europe.
The evening's stories take you close to human destinies and everyday life, which was characterized by both scarcity and uncertainty, but also by unity and ingenuity. May 4, 1945 marks the turning point, when the message of freedom from the BBC sent a rush of joy through the country. As a beautiful rounding off the evening, we enjoy replacement coffee and an oatmeal macaroon while listening to the historic radio broadcast that brought the news of the German capitulation.
