On September 7th, a day filled with historical experiences and magnificent sights will be held when the Green Museum and Gammel Estrup Denmark's Manor Museum invite you to a traditional Hubertus hunt. In collaboration with the Jutland Hunting Club and the Løvenholm Foundation, the museums offer a day where horses, hunting and old crafts bring the past to life.

Thanks to generous support from the ELRO Foundation, admission is free for everyone on this day, making it possible for anyone interested to come and experience the many exciting activities.

The Hubertus Hunt – A tradition with deep roots

The St. Hubertus Hunt, named after the saint of hunters, Saint Hubertus, is a tradition that has its roots in the ancient parforce hunt, which has been practiced in Europe since the 17th century. Parforce hunts, in which riders on horseback hunted game through forests and open landscapes, were once a favorite among nobility and royalty.

On the day, over 20 horses and their red-jacketed riders, after a parade and welcome from the museums, will ride out through the gate at 10:30, marking the start of the day's hunt. The riders, led by two front riders with fox tails, will lead the field through the scenic terrain surrounding the museums and Løvenholmskoven. The public is invited to follow, guided by the museums' interpreters, who will tell about the history of the hunt and point out the best places to witness the impressive jumps.

After the morning's jumping series, it will be possible to greet both riders and horses near the center house.

The day ends with a parade in the courtyard by the museums around 1:30 p.m., where riders and horses will conclude the day's Hubertus Hunt.

Discover ancient crafts and historical exhibits

In addition to the spectacular Hubertus hunt, the museums will also offer a number of other experiences. For example, volunteers from the Green Museum will be present to demonstrate old crafts and traditional working methods, and they will also offer tastings based on the lovely colors and flavors of autumn.

At Gammel Estrup, children and adults can travel back to the Middle Ages and try out a knight training course, where you can hone your skills in the art of ring riding on a fancy horse or bicycle. If you get hungry along the way, the Manor Kitchen is open selling homemade pastries and coffee from Madam Blå.

The museums' indoor exhibitions will also be open all day, where you can experience everything from the history of hunting and agriculture to life on Danish manors through the centuries. The museums' outdoor areas, including ornamental and commercial gardens, nature playgrounds and live animals, will also be accessible to the whole family.

The Green Museum's Living Saturday – program

The hunt for St. Hubertus on a yellow field

There is a special atmosphere about the Hubertus hunt in the beautiful nature.

The Green Museum's Living Saturday takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and 12 guilds with volunteers come and show off their skills and old crafts, while always having time for a nice chat.

Beekeepers' Guild: In the Beekeepers' Guild, our volunteers from the Beekeepers' Guild look after our bees. Come and talk to them about honey and bees.

The Blacksmith's Guild: Our blacksmiths are based in the old forge, where they proudly display the old blacksmithing craft at the ice rink.

The visitor hosts: In our visitor magazine, volunteers are ready to talk about our magazines and the objects on display. There is plenty of opportunity to 'kick the tires' here.

Tractor Workshop: If you weren't satisfied with the hosts, the tractor workshop next door is the obvious place to continue. Here, the experienced mechanics are busy repairing and maintaining our old machines.

Brewers Guild: Brewing beer is an art form that really makes high demands. Come and meet our brewers guild and hear more about how beer was brewed over 100 years ago.

The Polish House Group: Our Polish House Group is based in the Polish House. They always have time to serve a cup of coffee and talk about the unique Polish House that we have here at the Green Museum.

Gardeners' Guild: Our gardeners look after the garden at Polakhuset and on the day there is an opportunity to visit the garden and have a chat about their work.

Madlauget: One of the more popular stops for our Living Saturdays is Madens Hus, where the food guild provides exciting tastings of historical Danish recipes. On the day it's Jordæbler, a recipe dating back to 1766

The dairy farmers: The dairy farmers also have tastings of their craft, they have provided butter, buttermilk, fresh cheese and cheeses made for this year's agricultural fair in the spring.

The Butchers: The last exciting tasting station is our skilled butchers. They are known for their delicious meat dishes, but for Levende Lørdag, the starting point is seasonal fruit, so they make apple pork.

The Forest Guild: As usual, the Forest Guild can be found inside our exhibition about the forest – BIG. Here they are ready to talk about the work in the forest and the many large machines.
