40 years of sparks and community in the forge
When the hammer hits the anvil in the old forge at the Green Museum, it is with 40 years of tradition behind it. Since 1985, the blacksmiths' guild has kept the old craft alive – and now they are ready to celebrate their anniversary.
On Friday, September 26th from 2–4 p.m., the guild invites you to an open house at the forge. On this day, the fire is out for a rare occasion, but guests can meet the blacksmiths, hear stories from the 40 years and toast with them on the day.
If you want to experience the red-hot iron, the hammer's strike and the sparks flying, you should come on Saturday or Sunday (September 27-28), when the blacksmiths are back in full swing. All three days there is free admission to the forge (but not to the rest of the museums).
The blacksmiths' guild currently has around 30 active members who take turns manning the forge six days a week during the summer months. Here they show the public how the village blacksmith worked in the old days – and keep both the craft and the community alive.
