The risalamanden did not start as a dessert, but as a cheap, filling appetizer.<\/p><\/div>\n

One of the most important competitive Christmas traditions on Christmas Eve is undoubtedly the 'fight for the almond gift'.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But do you know why we have an almond gift and have to find the whole almond in the rice bowl?<\/p>\n

This tradition dates back to the 18th century, when the Christmas Eve feast was typically started with a starter of the cheap but filling sweet porridge, which was supposed to ensure that not as much of the expensive meat that awaited afterwards was eaten as the main course and the actual feast.<\/p>\n

To lure as much sweet porridge as possible into the company's stomachs (primarily the men's), the housewife typically made a small competition out of this appetizer.<\/p>\n

She simply hid a small nut in the large portion of sweet porridge \u2013 and the lucky 'finder' of the nut won the prestigious prize \u2013 the precursor to the almond gift. The prize that time was a kiss from the girl on the farm.<\/p>\n

Back then, people didn't think much about whether there was consent... but today, it's hardly acceptable as a prize for the winner of the almond giveaway?<\/p>\n
