ELRO Day: Free access to shared experiences
The museums
Gammel Estrup and the Green Museum have a number of exciting indoor exhibitions – including themed exhibitions on agriculture, forestry, hunting and food, as well as interior exhibitions that show Danish manor life through the centuries. In addition, there are large, beautiful and varied outdoor areas around the buildings with ornamental and utility gardens, greenhouses, a nature playground, live animals, fields and much more that can form a fantastic setting for experiences for the whole family. There is much to experience for both young and old, and the museums invite several generations to go on an excursion and have unforgettable, shared experiences. On the day, the museums will provide free admission everywhere in both the indoor exhibitions and the outdoor areas at both museums, so that all types of families can enjoy the many experiences.
Experiences at the Green Museum
At the Green Museum you can meet the museum's employees and volunteers during the day. You can also have the opportunity to try your hand at old skills and see how old crafts have been carried out and refined. For example, there will be beer brewing, rope making, bow production and the preparation of historical dishes, where there will of course be tastings. The museum's skilled professionals will also take guests on special tours during the day, where you can learn more about the old Danish breeds of farm animals or join a unique tour of the visitor magazine, which is normally closed to guests.
Experiences at Gammel Estrup Denmark's Manor House Museum
At Gammel Estrup you can meet several of the museum's many volunteers. For example, the seamstresses who sew historical costumes and textiles for the manor's halls and rooms, and the garden group who look after the museum's kitchen garden and convey the story of the self-sufficient manor, where you could previously get almost all the fruit and vegetables for the manor's large household on your own land. In the Manor Kitchen you can meet the housemaid, and buy yourself a piece of cake baked according to Gammel Estrup's 100-year-old recipes and a cup of coffee from Madam Blå. You can also join a tour with Gammel Estrup's volunteer guides and gain insight into Gammel Estrup's unique history.
